MOCA Movie Night: “Velvet Goldmine”

Kick off Pride Month with “Velvet Goldmine,” written and directed by New Queer Cinema pioneer, Todd Haynes. Almost a decade has elapsed since glam-rock superstar Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) escaped the spotlight by faking his death on stage. Now, investigative journalist Arthur Stuart (Christian Bale) is on assignment to uncover the truth behind the enigmatic Slade. Stuart, himself forged by the music of the 1970s, explores the larger-than-life stars who were once his idols and what has become of them since the turn of the new decade. Velvet Goldmine is both a tribute to the 1970s glam rock era, drawing heavily on the rock histories and mythologies of David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Lou Reed, while also an exploration of identity, reinvention, obsession, desire, and self-destruction. Director: Todd Haynes. Starring: Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ewan McGregor, Christian Bale, Toni Collette. Free. 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. 333 North Laura St., Jacksonville, FL; mocajacksonville.unf.edu // @mocajax
