Get Outside: 5 Great Camping Spots near Jacksonville
Living in an area as beautiful as the First Coast, it’s easy to be overwhelmed with options when looking to take a trip outside for the weekend and enjoy a camping trip. We’ve picked out five great camping options for folks of all experience levels, from first timers to experienced travelers.
Cumberland Island
Accessible only by ferry, Cumberland Island isn’t the easiest spot to get to, but it’s extremely worthwhile for dedicated campers looking for a one-of-a-kind outdoors experience. Georgia’s largest barrier island is a relatively untouched piece of land boasting natural beaches and marshland; for experienced campers, there’s few better experiences than spending a few nights on Cumberland. Located just over the Florida/Georgia line, these primitive camping sites are a short drive (and ferry ride) away from downtown Jacksonville. It’s wild to imagine how quickly you can be transported to another world, encountering myriad wild horse, boar, armadillos, and more while taking in the pristine views of untouched coastal Georgia. Cumberland Island, GA
Anastasia State Park Campground
Boasting nearly 140 campsites with amenities like electricity and water hookups suitable for both RV and tents, Anastasia State Park has something for every camper. Located just 40 miles south of Jacksonville, this local favorite has clean facilities, access to white sand beaches, and, for adventurous travelers, kayak and stand up paddle board rentals. Those looking for some more adventurous activities can enjoy the Ancient Dunes Nature Trail, a short but visually striking hiking trail. 300 Anastasia Park Road St. Augustine FL 32080
Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park
While it bears no relation (as far as we know) to Bikini Kill/Julie Ruin/Le Tigre rockstar Kathleen Hanna, Kathryn Abbey Hanna Park is a great place to check out that’s less than a half hour from downtown Jacksonville. With almost 300 campsites in a vibrant, gorgeous setting on the beach, this is a sure-thing for anyone looking for a quick weekend getaway without having to travel too far from home. The beach itself is (understandably) popular, but the well-loved campground is surprisingly peaceful, lush setup, with facilities for campers with any level of experience. 500 Wonderwood Dr, Jacksonville, FL 32233
North Beach Camp Resort
Located about 40 miles south of Jacksonville in St. Augustine, it’s hard to find a better location for beach camping than North Beach Camp Resort. Beloved for their private campsites separated by plenty of greenery, North Beach is a luxurious campground that won’t break the bank. Expect brilliant views and plenty of amenities, including a pair of well-liked restaurants nearby, including Aunt Kate’s family restaurant, located onsite. 4125 Coastal Hwy, St. Augustine, FL 32084
Camp Chowenwaw Park Treehouses
For those looking for a beginner-friendly foray into the world of outdoor recreation, Camp Chowenwaw Park’s treehouses, located less than thirty miles from downtown Jacksonville, is a great option. In addition to the typical (but well-liked) cabin and tent camping offerings, Camp Chowenwaw has 9 treehouses available for rent. they’re fully enclosed to help keep your distance from many of the critters you may encounter on ground level, and while they don’t have electricity, included with your treehouse rental is admittance to a kitchen house, a small camp kitchen for you (and your neighbors) to use to prep food. A pretty good halfway point between a hotel and full-on roughing it! 1517 Ball Rd, Green Cove Springs, FL 32043
