5 Florida Beers for August
With the Summer season in full swing, flavorful and icy cold beverage offerings are an essential staple for any poolside hangouts or backyard grill outs. Thankfully, there’s no shortage of incredible selections on draft and in cans or growlers to go directly in the Jacksonville area. With several award-winning outfits and an incredible variety of diverse options, dive headfirst into some of our top picks (even for when you’re inside soaking up A/C).
Fruit On The Bottom (Fruited Sour, 5.1% ABV) – Green Room Brewing
Coming from Jacksonville Breach’s first microbrewery, separate from a lot of their hoppier selections, this refreshing sour series takes some of the most delicious fruit combinations and offerings for the season. The latest releases include Apricot, Pineapple Peach and Watermelon of those released thus far. Worth a visit to the quant and comforting taproom just to sample the tart and super-quenchable draft options. 228 N. 3rd St., Jacksonville, FL; greenroombrewing.com // @greenroombrew
Aloha (Smoothie Sour, 5% ABV) – Prison Pals Brewing Co.
Started by four friends from Argentina, Prison Pals has quickly established a name for itself by releasing solidly hazy IPAs and crisp lagers. But to launch in state where the sun shines enough to earn it its nickname, Florida seems to be the perfect place for a brewery looking to make a name for themselves. Much credit for this is owed to their fruited smoothie sours jam-packed with flavor, and Aloha being the standout of the bunch so far. Bringing a bright acidity with pineapple complimented by a cooling mint and slightly spicy ginger kick, it’ll have you fantasizing of white sandy beaches with cascading, frothy waves. 3555 N Dixie Hwy., Oakland Park, FL; prisionpals.com // @prisonpalsbrewco
Pleasure Chest IPA (India Pale Ale, 6.6% ABV) – Playalinda Brewing
Riding the wave of the brew style and flavor trend that has captured domestic tastes in the last decade, here’s an IPA from Playalinda Brewing that won’t overwhelm you with hops on a summer day. Instead, it will provide you with a splash of juicy, citric goodness that won’t let you forget why Florida is called “The Orange State.” Coming in at a decently substantial ABV, it’s not one to crush a 6-pack of but rather an option to be enjoyed at their engaging and creative Playalinda Hardware Store taproom or outdoors at their Brix Project beer garden (dog-friendly, even). With each batch crafted, Brewmaster Ron Raike adds or takes away something to make this IPA a beer that will keep you on the edge of your seat. 305 S. Washington Ave., Titusville, FL; playalindabrewingcompany.com // @playalindabrewco
You Should Smile More (Saison, 4.6% ABV) – Cigar City Brewing
This hoppy saison is brewed in collaboration with the Florida chapter of the Pink Boots Society (an organization dedicated to assist, inspire and encourage women and/or non-binary individuals in the fermented and alcoholic beverage industry) as a tribute to the individuals who make the brewing industry run. The profile that includes HBC 630, Idaho Gem, Loral Talas, and Triumph hops pairs against notes of kiwi, pear, orange zest, starfruit, baked apple, white wine, and white pepper. Just don’t try to repeat the name to any strong presences in your own life (for the sake of preserving it). Just share this beer instead. 924 W. Spruce St, Tampa, FL; cigarcitybrewing.com // @cigarcitybrewing
J’Ville Lemon Shandy (Shandy, 4.5%) – Engine 15 Brewing
A variant on their excellent J’Ville Lager, the injection of bright citrus goodness only leads to more refreshment. Leinenkugel’s has got nothing on this one. 1500 Beach Blvd #217, Jacksonville, FL; engine15.com // @engine15brewing
